On Planet Jent (2023)
Media: Monitor, Mediapipe API, Webcam Cardboard, Paper
Gaze into this portal as you transform into creatures on Planet Jent, on which all matter is constructed from the flesh of computer-generated images.

Planet Jent is a utopia where everyone is equal and happy. I obscure the audiences faces but not entirely, to make them wonder about their identities that are attached to their face (racial, gender, privilege, etc) and make them question what does it mean to be a Jent.

Big thanks to professor Doug Rosman and Chloe Thompson who helped me with the code!

The layout for the installation is inspired by Vietnamese pagodas and traditional decorative art, stacking layers upon layers of portals. The colour explosion, extremely intricacy mimic the my all-time favorite Khai Dinh Tomb in Hue, Vietnam. A portal/ altar/ monument of Jent was built convincingly grand and overwhelming to evoke the otherworldliness, artificiality and approaching Vietnamese futurism

All images shown are made in collaboration/ inspired by AI tools (Midjourney, StyleGAN) to create a whole new world. As a result of being in isolation, I have always had a desire to clone myself or the blob of existence that I am, and this portal is a way to do it.

ccGAN (2022)
Media: Trained StyleGAN2 Dataset,
Brightside Screen
This piece discusses mass production of data generated by the influencer culture, while questioning the boundary of art and content. Using datasets from almost every documented experimental makeup and drag looks from April 2020 until April 2022, Jent generated a series of dismorphed faces. Thus, Jent is not one individual but merely a collection of data and images. Jent only exist on the internet space, and they are haunting your endless scrolling habit for diluted dopamine hits. Jent doesn’t have an inherent gender, and through the binary lens of machine learning that construct and decide their identity. As an Asian with an unmemorable face, the social media algorithm doesn’t favor them and give them less promotion than white people and people who follow trend just to feed the algorithm that is designed to measure your data as means of surveillance.

The Gardener (2020)
Materials: Microcontrollers (Circuit Playground Express, Arduino), Motor Servos, Cables, Cardboard, Paper, Wooden Sticks, Pushpins, Pigment liner pens.

This is the Gardener. The Gardener is a drawing robot which can grow new plants in the garden, like blooming roses or symmetrical succulents. Some other times it can dig a hole or detect some crawling worms.

The machinery of the Gardener responds to the exhibition theme “displacement”. The machine is composed of 4 180-degree motor servos and a continuous spinning table in the middle. I attached 2 pigment liner pens to the motors with adjustable handle lengths. It can draw with absolute angle control, or with a margin of error with the looseness of the handle. The machine does not draw perfect symmetry, but it can draw experimentally as restrained to the handle position and gravity. The spinning table resembles the earth quality that the Gardener work with.

The sound level nearby the Gardener correlate with the angle of one 180-degrees motor, and the spinning speed of the table as well. This another layer of sound sensor makes the machine a great listener and reactive to the surroundings.

The Gardener explores the relationship between the machine and the artist. The gardening metaphor is related to both the natural creation and the human interference on nature, the same way the machine is both a tool and a collaborator/artist itself. Although the Gardener is does not assume human figure nor have the full sense of agency of a human, it still possesses

the ability to create. The aesthetic is black and white and somewhat minimalistic, reflecting on the binaries that this machine a part of: the computer binary code, the obedience/disobedience, the creativity/nothingness.

svperficial_world (2020)
Media: Video Collage,
Remixed soundtrack
In a form of a music video, this piece uses Instagram as a visual platform, featuring the endless scroll, annoying advertisements, and also discusses the labor of content creation, likes as merit and trendiness. The soundtrack is a remix of viral Tiktok songs in 2020.
