Laurie Anderson - Big Science (1982)
Typographic Expression Puzzles
MATERIALS:
6 X 4.75”^3 ACRYLIC CUBES, VINYL CUT STICKERS (METALLIC), CLEAR ADHESIVE LATEX PRINT.
This project is a typographic expression of Laurie Anderson’s songs in her Big Science album (1982). Taking the form of a puzzle set, now consisting of 6transparent cubes, I closely interpret her lyrics of Let X=X and O Superman. Thesides can line up and be arranged in various ways without one right answer, as Iexperimented with transparency, communicating dialogue between the 2 oppositeside, and the quality of floating texts and echoing sound in digital space, whileshowcasing the playfulness of Andersons music. As the theme of this album isabout technology while performing in a robotic manner, I included a handwritten butpixelated typeface (x and o) and a type face traced from AI generated images thatis trained from a dataset of my art (letter o).

1. Sketch then transfer the design in InDesign and Illustrator
Using 2 custom typefaces relate to the technology theme:

2. Printed out test cubes on white paper

3. Revise the Design then lay them out on Illustrator files for Latex Clear and Metallic Vinyl Cut prints. Trim the print with the big scale trimmer into squares to adhere to the plain cubes.
